Suek, the Finnish sports ethics center, begins an investigation into suspected serious ethical violations.

The suspicions are aimed at the figure skating club Helsingfors Skridskoklubb, its head coach and the club’s various actors.

Bullying coach Mirjami Penttinen served as the team’s head coach. Helsingin Sanomat reports at the beginning of March, that Penttinen continued his inappropriate behavior towards underage skaters. After HS published its news the club announced that he had ended his employment with Penttinen. Penttinen’s last working day at the club is April 13.

Penttinen’s questionable behavior became a topic of conversation already in 2020. He was banned from competition in January 2020 for violating the ethical rules of sports. Penttinen filed an appeal against the decision, after which he returned to coaching duties.

Suek says that he found the prerequisites for starting the investigation after the preliminary investigation he carried out.

Suek says that he has received an “extraordinary amount” of reports about the activities of the club and the people connected to it. The first of about 50 announcements were made in December 2025.

The investigation will find out, among other things, whether the club has followed and supervised its activities appropriately and intervened appropriately in possible suspected violations.

– Since there have been many contacts, the investigation will inevitably take time. Within the club, different players also have strong differences of opinion about the events. Because of these issues, the investigation will take months and may even go into early autumn, Suek’s head of investigation Jouko Ikonen says in the announcement.
