Amsterdam opposition requests urgent debate after news of incidents in the controversial Weesperstraat cut

After it became known this week that more incidents involving the emergency services occurred with the cut on Weesperstraat than was assumed, opposition councilors requested an emergency debate.

Although traffic councilor Van der Horst (D66) long maintained that there had been hardly any signals that emergency services were experiencing problems due to the closure of Weesperstraat, a Woo request from AT5 shows that this was indeed the case.

For example, one day after the start of the trial, an ambulance that was urgently on its way from North to OLVG East stopped on Weesperstraat. A week later, cars belonging to officers of the Regional Medical Assistance Organization (GHOR) were refused.

‘Pretend’

To challenge councilor Melanie van der Horst, councilors from VVD, JA21, Forum, Denk, Volt and CDA have now requested an emergency debate. “Trust in government is essential in a democracy,” tweets initiator Daan Wijnants. “It must therefore be clarified why the councilor pretended that she could not have known reports from emergency services about delays at the Weesperknip.”

During the test with the cut, council members asked up to three times an urgent debate. In addition, councilor Van der Horst survived a motion of censure when it first became known that emergency services had raised concerns about the longer arrival times.
