The war memorial on the complex of WV-HEDW football club is not to be missed. An impressive plaque with 262 names is located directly at the main entrance of the Amsterdam club. Thanks to the historical committee, these deceased footballers will never be forgotten. In NH Sport you can hear and see the special stories behind this memorial.
“We deliberately put the monument in view,” says Vincent Huis in ‘t Veld. As chairman of the WV-HEDW historical committee, he and five other members manage the club’s history. “I am often silent for a moment when I see the 262 names. I find the massiveness very intense.”
Crane
The monument is very confrontational for committee member André Lopes Dias, because he has a personal connection with two names on the plaque. “A second cousin of my father and a friend of his knocked on our door in early 1943. I was three years old at the time and they gave me a crane. Shortly afterwards they were arrested and never returned.”
