Amstelveen artificial cow has its colors back: “Important for the neighborhood”

Local residents can finally enjoy the colorful artificial cow again on the roundabout between the Gondola and the Dr. Willem Dreesweg in Amstelveen. The cow was first doused with a dark green gunk in August and later that month also covered in graffiti.

Arts councilor Herbert Raat saw that the ‘attack’ on the cow stirred up a lot of emotions among local residents. “That made you notice how popular that work of art actually is,” he tells NH. The polyester statue was placed seven years ago by the Waardhuizen-Middenhoven neighborhood platform and colored by painter Sergio Ferdini.

Photos taken after the cleaning action this morning show that the cow suffered considerable damage. The paint has come off in several places. The specialized cleaning company that removed the green paint will touch up the stripes. “Fortunately, it will not cost the municipality thousands but hundreds of euros, but still,” Raat explains the total damage.

The councilor calls on vandals who target the cow in the future to think twice. “Just keep your hands off.” There will be no additional measures to protect the beloved animal. “You can’t add a police officer day and night.”
