Newcastle United have unveiled their second signing for the coming season, completing a transfer record for both NUFC themselves and Burnley FC. Goalkeeper Nick Pope (30) comes for a transfer fee of £10 million, around EUR 11.5 million to EUR 12 million. No matter how you calculate the exact amount, buying a keeper for the “Magpies” has never been so expensive, and Premier League relegated Burnley has never earned so much for a goalkeeper.
Pope himself ends up in the top 10 most expensive goalkeepers over the age of 30 with the fee. Only six transfers generated more than 12 million euros here, including Petr Cech’s move to Arsenal or Claudio Bravo’s move to Manchester City. Despite the high expenses, Pope is far from sure of the place between the posts. After four years as the Clarets’ regular keeper, it is now up to the national keeper to compete with long-time regular Martin Dubravka (33) for the role of number one.

“There’s been a lot of interest in him from other clubs this summer so I’d like to thank our owners and everyone behind the scenes for giving us an edge over the competition,” said manager Eddie Howe. “I am delighted that he is joining us as we prepare for this exciting challenge.”
