US midfielder Catarina Macario is moving back to the USA from Europe and is likely to sign a record contract.

Catarina Macario is said to have signed the highest contract ever in women’s football when she moved from Chelsea FC to the San Diego Waves. As reported by “ESPN” and the “Guardian”, among others, Macario will earn a total of eight million dollars (6.94 million euros) for her five-year contract. That’s around 1.4 million euros per year.

San Diego has now confirmed the move. Macario’s contract in London would have expired in the summer, but the NWSL club signed the midfielder immediately. A transfer fee of 300,000 euros should flow for this.

For Macario it is a return to her homeland. At the age of twelve, the native Brazilian moved to San Diego with her father and brother in 2012. She received US citizenship at the end of 2020 and made her debut for the country’s national team a short time later.

By moving back to the USA, she will probably be even more present for the national team, in which she has played a total of 29 international matches and has already scored 16 goals. She scored eight of them in the ten games last year.

Macario’s big goal will be the 2027 World Cup. It’s a special tournament for her because it takes place in her birth country, Brazil.
