Ambassador Antonov called NATO a vestige of the Cold War – RBK

The existence of the NATO bloc contradicts the principle of the indivisibility of European security and is a vestige of the Cold War. About this in an interview with Newsweek magazine stated Russian Ambassador to the United States Anatoly Antonov.

“NATO’s eastward expansion runs counter to the general and collectively agreed principle of the indivisibility of security in Europe. The transatlantic bloc itself is a vestige of the Cold War, ”Antonov believes.

Blinken said the West never made promises not to expand NATO

Earlier Antonov, commenting on the current relations between Russia and NATO, said that they are in an extremely dangerous position. According to him, Russia has come to a point where there is “nowhere to retreat.” He also called the military development of Ukraine by NATO member states “a real threat”.

In mid-December, Moscow handed over draft agreements on security guarantees to the United States and NATO. They talk about the non-expansion of NATO to the east, non-joining the alliance of the countries of the former USSR and the ban on military activities on the territory of Ukraine. Negotiations on security guarantees are due on January 12th.
