Amazon Prime Video with a new interface for the streaming homepage

Amazon Prime Video is one of the most used streaming providers worldwide. But the interface is not really intuitive, and content is sometimes difficult to find. But a face lift is now supposed to change that – Amazon Prime Video is completely redesigning the interface.

The new user interface for Amazon Prime Video should be rolled out starting this week and be available on the first devices. The redesign affects both the devices connected via the app and the Fire TV. With the new user interface, Amazon Prime Video wants to put even more focus on its own content and make it easier to search for films and series. The streaming provider announces several innovations for this.

New navigation based on Netflix and Disney+

A large part of the usability of a website depends on the navigation. With providers such as Netflix and Disney+, users will find the menu items for series, films, new content and settings on the left side of the screen in a vertical view. This means they can be called up at any time, even if users are scrolling through the offers on the start page. On the Amazon Prime Video user interface, however, they were previously placed horizontally. But with the redesign, the menu bar should also be arranged vertically in the future. In the bar, users will then find the items “Home”, “Shop”, “Search”, “Live TV”, “Free for me” and “My area”. Subcategories will also be introduced, with which users can, for example, access films, series and sports directly from the start page. In the “Shop” area, the subcategories “Channels” and “Borrow or Buy” are added.

Find (live) sports and TV programs easier

For fans of sports broadcasts, Amazon Prime Video introduces the aforementioned “Sports” submenu with the new user interface, which is intended to make it easier to find games. The provider also presents interesting leagues and teams in a specially developed carousel. On the new live TV page, on the other hand, matches and live sports events that are currently being broadcast can be found. Amazon Prime Video lists all current sports and TV programs in a live TV program guide, which users can use to see what is currently on the air and find out when the next broadcast will start.

Streaming tips on the new Amazon Prime Video user interface

The streaming provider also gave program tips for customers in the past. On the new user interface, Amazon Prime Video presents them in a more visually appealing way in the form of carousels. For example, there is a carousel with the “Top 10 Charts” in which the currently most popular content can be found. There is a “super carousel” especially for Amazon Originals, Exclusives and Prime Video Cinema, in which Amazon lists the latest top titles with larger film posters and trailers that play automatically.

Prime content labeled more clearly

One annoyance with Amazon Prime Video for many users is the mixing of Prime content and that which is paid for. Amazon Prime Video introduces clear symbols with the new user interface so that customers can better recognize the titles included in the Prime membership on the start page. For example, a blue tick indicates a title included in the subscription. A shopping bag, on the other hand, marks content that users have to pay for. There is also still the Prime overview, which can be found under “My subscriptions”. Here the provider lists all videos and series that are included in the Prime membership.

New search with live suggestions

Netflix users are already familiar with the search, where suitable suggestions are already displayed as you type. Amazon Prime Video takes over this search function in the new user interface. In addition, the results can be filtered by genre or by resolution such as 4K UHD. Here, too, Amazon uses the new symbols such as the blue tick and the shopping bag to clearly filter free content from purchased content.
