The online retailer Amazon relies significantly more on Germany than before.

In 2024, around 14 billion euros were invested in this country and around two billion more than 2023, the US company said in Munich. New locations in Horn-Bad Meinberg (NRW), Dummerstorf (Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania) and Erfurt (Thuringia) were built for the money. Since 2010, investments of around 90 billion euros have been held.

Germany boss Rocco Bräuniger did not want to comment more specifically about the planned editions for 2025 and 2026, but said: “We will continue to invest very, very strongly.” In Bietigheim (Baden-Württemberg), Könern (Saxony-Anhalt) and Rohr (Bavaria), new logistics centers are soon to be built. Amazon is stored in such a center to sell them on the Internet. “We have to be close to the customer: inside,” says the manager, whose company increasingly relying on ‘Same Day Delivery’: Some products can be ordered in the afternoon and are still at the customer in the evening of the same day.

Amazon now has around 40,000 employees in Germany and thus 4,000 more than a year earlier. They work in logistics, sorting and development centers as well as at other locations. In addition, there are deliverers: inside who extend packages for Amazon as a subcontractor.

Alexa should also be able to understand Saxon well

Amazon also operates development locations at which improvement of the service is tinkered. At the Aachen location, developers are working to make the voice assistant Alexa better. “Among other things, it is about understanding of language – that Alexa Sächsisch understands as well as Bavarian and northern German,” says Amazon Germany boss browner.

The Cloud division of the US Group, Amazon Web Service (AWS), has announced investments of over 8.8 billion euros in its infrastructure in the Frankfurt region by 2026. The example of AWS illustrates the growing interest of the US group in Germany, where it invested 9.6 billion euros in Germany in Germany to 2023 to 2023 – now a similar amount will not be spent in ten years, but in just three years.

Amazon is a market leader at a large distance, and the Hamburg online retailer Otto is one of the significantly smaller competitors. An estimated 60 percent of online trading in Germany is on the US giants. The market power is so great that Germany’s top competitive guard Amazon has critically observed and have already initiated several procedures – the Federal Cartel Office has an ‘outstanding’ cross -market importance for the competition.

Digital group relies on AI

Applications of artificial intelligence (AI) are becoming increasingly important for Amazon. In this way, consumers can be summarized from the inside of other buyers or ask for a special topic. In the United States, the company recently presented a AI assistant for companies that sell their goods via Amazon – i.e. the Amazon marketplace. The AI ​​tool should make work easier for entrepreneurs and, for example, reorder goods independently if they gradually run out in an Amazon camp.

In addition, the AI ​​assistant can initiate advertising measures for products and give commands for storage or price change. The entrepreneur can decide how much autonomy the AI ​​assistant gets. In Germany, the AI ​​tool should come out in the next few months.
