Amateur referees hang whistles – Last minute Football news

Referees, perhaps one of the most controversial elements in Turkish football, are leaving the profession one by one.

In the last 3 seasons, 1,549 referees left their duty, and the number of active referees in TFF, which was 6,292 in 2020-21, dropped to 4,743 in the 2023-24 season. There was an increase in the number of active observers, which was 2 thousand 27 in the 2020-21 season.

As the age criterion increased from 65 to 70, there was a return to observership, and some names continued their duties.

THEY ARE NOT HAPPY WITH THE CONDITIONS

The main reason for the decrease in the number of referees is the wages per match, which was 220 lira per match fee, which was below expectations.

In addition, the recent increased criticism, harsh rhetoric and violent incidents have affected many referees psychologically.

In summary, approximately 500 referees quit during the season. The number of referees and observers currently active in TFF is 6 thousand 551. In the 2020-21 season, this number was 8 thousand 319. It is highly likely that the downward trend will continue.
