Player saves seagull’s life

In the middle of an amateur football game in Türkiye, a very special medical incident occurs. The focus is on a seagull.

In a rare incident in Turkish amateur football, a seagull was first hit by the ball and then revived. As the online platform “Türkiye Today” reports, the incident occurred during a promotion play-off final between Mevlanakapi Guzelhisar and Istanbul Yurdum Spor.

A video shows Yurdum Spor’s goalkeeper Muhammet Uyanik hitting the bird that was flying across the pitch after a shot from the ground in the 22nd minute. The seagull immediately fell to the ground and remained motionless. According to “Türkiye Today”, Uyanik did not realize at first what he had just shot out of the sky.

Yurdum Spor captain Gani Catan was the first to react. According to him, the seagull was unresponsive and unable to breathe. His first instinct: cardiopulmonary resuscitation. What initially looks a bit strange on the video was, however, successful. Catan watched as more and more signs of life came from the little bird. At first there were movements in his legs and eyes, then he began to breathe again.

Catan then handed the bird over to the medical supervisors, who continued to care for the seagull, which probably suffered an injury to its wing and was initially unable to fly.

How the seagull is doing now is unclear. However, Catan said he would be happy to visit the bird if he found out where it was now being treated. And although Yurdum ultimately didn’t prevail against Mevlanakapi Guzelhisar, Catan was able to bring something positive out of the game: “We missed the championship, but saving a life is a good thing. That was more important than the championship.”
