Esch has become a bit quieter since a little year. The beloved neighborhood superfine is closed there, just as in ‘s Gravenmoer is about to happen, because too few people came. All residents have had to drive to Boxtel or Vught for their groceries for a while. But for many elderly people that is easier said than done.

Because not all elderly people have a car, and some are not allowed to drive at all. The upstairs neighbor of the former store knows everything about that. “I came to live here because there was a store nearby,” says the woman.

“I miss the store very much. I always did some shopping and it would be nice if there was at least a bakery or a greengrocer in it. Now there is nothing at all!”

Ideal son -in -law
“My son -in -law drives to Boxtel and gets groceries for me. I will pick it up with him, in Esch,. That is nice. I can’t always drive because of a medical condition. I miss it to have a chat in the supermarket. Most of them came here.”

Solutions
Delivery is of course also an option. “But not for me,” says the upstairs neighbor who is about to go to the market in Boxtel. “It is expensive and I’d rather look at what is in the store. Then I don’t have to decide immediately.”

Another solution is a supermarket full of volunteers. Jolanda almost had the supermarket in her back garden and thought that was an excellent plan. “I even signed up for that. I work part -time, so I could sit behind the counter one day a week.” Only that plan was shot by the lessor.

“The bread was so good.”

Jolanda misses the supermarket. “The bread was so good, some people are now driving all the way to the Plus in Schijndel because of that bread.”

Yet the supermarket does not appear to be good for everything. “I always did the big groceries in Boxtel, there the range was wider and the groceries less expensive. But when I was cooking and the cooking cream or nasi herbs were used up, then it is handy such a supermarket close by.”

Ben also lives in the village. “If not everyone would come here for the ‘forgotten message’, the store would not have had to close,” he says, throwing away a load of empty bottles.

Several elderly residents tell Omroep Brabant that the same applies to them: driving themselves often does not work, so they are still a year, and also in the future, depending on their families. It does not look like there will soon be another supermarket in the old vacant building.
