Already 8 dead after mudslide on Italian holiday island of Ischia | Weather news

AbroadAt least eight people died after a landslide on the southern Italian island of Ischia. According to the ANSA news agency, the landslide was caused by heavy rainfall. Several buildings have been destroyed. Among the missing is a couple with a newborn baby.

The local fire department reports that a search is underway for the missing people in the town of Casamicciola. Among the missing are a father, mother and newborn baby, writes ANSA.

Two people were rescued from their car after the vehicle was dragged into the sea by a landslide. Images from Casamicciola show that several cars were swept away by the mudslide on Saturday morning and that houses were almost completely buried.

Many roads have been blocked or destroyed by the mudslides. That makes it difficult for rescuers to reach the crash site. The local authorities have therefore called on residents to stay at home so as not to complicate the rescue efforts.

Ischia is located off the coast of the city of Naples and is best known as a holiday destination. In the spa town of more than 8,000 inhabitants, there was an earthquake in 2017 that killed two people.
