Mikaela Shiffrin actually wanted to break the 100-win mark this winter. But now it is uncertain whether the US ski star will be able to return to skiing again this season. After her operation, the 29-year-old said, “We’ll have to wait a few weeks”. She also spoke of “a good portion of luck” at her fall.
The portal skiracing.com she said: “I think if everything had gone perfectly and the drainage had just been removed, we would have been pretty confident that the season was possible“But as it is, their return depends on it.”how things will improve in the next few weeks and months”.
She doesn’t have much pain and can walk slowly or climb stairs. But it is too early to say when and whether she will drive again this season.
Complications in recovery
Shiffrin fell during her home race and suffered a severe stab wound to her stomach. She has been out since then. Last Thursday (December 12, 2024) she had to undergo a “small, unexpected operation,” as she announced on Instagram. The recovery didn’t go as hoped. Wound fluid had to be removed and a muscle tear near the pelvis had to be treated, Shiffrin reported.
Stab wound “millimeters from the intestine”
Nevertheless, she was lucky: “It’s a deep puncture wound with pretty serious muscle trauma. I was really lucky because the wound was probably only a millimeter from my intestines”.
The 29-year-old is currently recovering at her home in Colorado. Shiffrin currently has 99 World Cup victories. In Killington she was on her way to breaking the 100 success mark, which had long been considered unattainable. She started the second run as the leader, but then lost control and crashed into a safety fence.
