Matthias Mayer always delivers at the Olympic Games – in Austria the 31-year-old from Carinthia is likely to have made himself immortal with his third Olympic victory after 2014 (downhill) and 2018 (also in Super-G).
After a near-false start in the starting gate, Mayer went into full attack mode on the again very aggressive and tough track in Yanqing and pulverized all the best times that Aleksander Aamodt Kilde had previously set. After an almost flawless run, the “1” also lit up for Mayer at the finish. After that, nobody beat his 1:19.94 minutes.
Surprise second Cochran Siegle intercepts Kilde
Directly after Mayer, however, the American Ryan Cochran-Siegle came very close to the best time. The 29-year-old, who has only won one World Cup race in his career so far, surprisingly took silver. He was four hundredths of a second short of the big sensation, gold. This makes it the closest Super-G decision at the Olympic Games to date
