Comic book hero Spider-Man has broken an auction record. A loose page from a comic book in which the superhero wears his black costume for the first time has been auctioned for almost 3.4 million dollars (about 2.9 million euros), American media reported today. Auction house Heritage Auctions speaks of the most expensive single page from a comic ever.
It concerns page 25 of ‘Secret Wars’ No. 8 from 1984. This shows, among other things, how Spider-Man poses in a black and white suit, instead of his more famous red and blue costume. Bidding started at $330,000. Page 24 of the same book went up for auction for $288,000 (about $252,000) to a new owner.
Heritage Auctions “couldn’t be happier,” says comic book art director Joe Mannarino. The sale, he says, proves that comic book art is “as beloved and valuable as anything put on canvas.” It is unknown who the new owner is.
The previous most expensive comic book page came from a 1974 issue of ‘The Incredible Hulk’. On this page superhero Wolverine made his debut. The property yielded more than 657,000 dollars (almost 575,000 euros) in 2014.
Last September, the comic book in which Spider-Man made his debut was auctioned for a record amount of 3.6 million dollars (more than 3 million euros). At the time, this became the most expensive comic book ever sold.
