Some 7,800 people were evacuated in Berlin on Wednesday after a World War II bomb was found in the east of the city. They temporarily had to move to a safer place until the explosive could be detonated in a controlled manner. According to the police, this took longer than expected because some people with walking difficulties needed more time.

The bomb was found on a building site in Hohenschönhausen, in eastern Berlin. Within a radius of five hundred meters, two furniture stores, two daycare centers, two schools and a hardware store were evacuated. 180 police went door to door and drove through the streets with loudspeakers to warn people.

Police later announced that the bomb was defused and all restrictions lifted. The police think it is a Soviet bomb.

Although evacuations of this scale are not common, experts in Berlin are still called about two to three times a day to investigate an explosive or munitions from World War II. The city council thinks that there are still about 4,500 bombs in the soil.
