All of this is one person’s fault

The best tennis player in the world is kicked out of the country by Australia. Rightly so. Now Novak Djokovic is threatened with even more trouble – because his self-dismantling sets new standards.

The Australian Open 2022 will take place without the current best tennis player in the world. Novak Djokovic’s appeal against the revocation of the visa was rejected by the Australian Minister of Immigration, Djokovic has already left the country on a plane to Dubai. It is the end of an undignified, sometimes bizarre farce that has not only kept the sports world in suspense in recent days.

What’s more, it’s the only right decision. Too much just didn’t seem to fit together in the statements of the 34-year-old, who has won the tournament in Melbourne nine times, more often than any other player in tennis history.

Djokovic no longer deserves understanding

Instead of his tenth triumph, the “Djoker” is suddenly faced with the shards of a career that could have been the greatest of his sport just a few weeks ago. But now Djokovic will always be talked about with a “but…”.

Because the eleven days since Djokovic’s attempted entry into Australia will continue to have an impact – too much has simply come together to be mercifully overlooked. Because this Novak Djokovic no longer deserves the understanding, the forbearance of the tennis world, of sport, of the world public. He gambled them away.

Novak Djokovic – possibly even willfully – gave false information in his entry application. Maybe he even lied. And: There is not only a big question mark behind his behavior as a person who tested positive for the corona virus, but now also behind the same test itself. And Djokovic? Commented on the increasingly overwhelming burden of proof in a long Instagram message – and clarified in his urge to prove that he didn’t really do much wrong, but only that he really did do a lot wrong.

Maybe Djokovic’s whole career is in question

A world athlete, a figurehead of multi-billion dollar corporations, has put his career at risk because he refuses to be vaccinated. And he lost. The “We against the whole world” tones from Djokovic’s homeland of Serbia, which glorify their hero as the victim of a very large constructed injustice against him and the whole country, are currently not only unhelpful, but counterproductive. Because only one person is responsible for Novak Djokovic’s demise: Novak Djokovic himself.
