Rakuten TV is one of the many, but also one of the lesser known streaming services in Germany. There are even top-class blockbusters to watch. TECHBOOK lists all new series and films here.
In addition to free access with advertising and limited content, Rakuten TV also offers a paid subscription for EUR 4.99 per month. This makes the provider one of the currently cheapest streaming services in Germany. The subscription unlocks access to the Starzplay offer. But there are also some highlights in the on-demand area. TECHBOOK presents all the titles that Rakuten TV is adding to its program in August.
The new series and films for free access
Through its advertising-financed free access, Rakuten TV offers a colorful selection of series and films that can be streamed free of charge. While these aren’t usually hyped blockbusters or acclaimed series, users can find classic TV movies from all genres, as well as BBC series and The Guardian documentaries. There are also some Rakuten Originals among them. Some of the titles are cast with top-class actors such as Charlie Sheen, John Travolta, Emily Blunt and Tom Hanks.
China Salesman
After a civil war in an unspecified African country, reconstruction is in full swing there. Many international companies are competing with each other to set up the telecommunications network – above all Yan Jian, chief negotiator for a Chinese company. But with the help of the tribal leader Kabbah (Mike Tyson), a corrupt American company wants to win the tender. Yan Jian becomes involved in this conspiracy, but gets support from smuggler and mercenary Lauder (Steven Seagal).

Conrad Valmont (Jason Bateman) lives a life of luxury. But when his parents suddenly divorce and his trust fund is cut, he suddenly finds himself on the street without any money. It’s good that his friend Dylan is giving him shelter. In his friend’s apartment, Conrad meets Beatrice (Olivia Wilde), with whom he immediately falls in love. But she’s already taken by Dylan. Conrad is now faced with the question: love or friendship?

All novelties for Rakuten TV Starzplay
The Starzplay program can only be accessed with a paid subscription to Rakuten TV. Access can be tested free of charge for the first seven days, after which it costs EUR 4.99 per month. Users will find numerous well-known titles here. This includes films like “Ted 2”, “The Mummy” with Brandon Fraser, “A Heart of Steel” with Brad Pitt or “Riddick”. There are also series of various genres, including “Spartacus”, “Black Sails”, “The Dresden Files” and “Nashville”.
Queer as Folk
After the British version of Queer as Folk, a US version followed in 1999 with a total of five seasons, which enjoyed some success. The Starzplay version of Queer as Folk is the most recent film adaptation. Again, a clique of frequent and dissolute men and women from New Orleans’ LGBTQIA+ community takes center stage. They survive an armed onslaught by Club Babylon and must now come to terms with what they have experienced. In order to survive the trauma, the friends try to give each other support.

The innovations in the cinema-on-demand area
Rakuten TV also offers a number of titles for purchase. These are mostly blockbusters that only recently ran in cinemas or premiered on the streaming service. The films and series can be found both to buy and to rent in the Rakuten TV store. The cost of renting the latest blockbusters is usually 4.99 euros. Purchasable titles are usually available from 6.99 euros – depending on the topicality.
In August, some high-profile hit movies are coming to Rakuten TV. These include the latest film in the Jurassic Park series, but also the film biography of Elvis and the new Pixar hit “Lightyear”.
