The Return of the Alfa 155 V6 TI: A Tribute to a Legend
In the world of motorsport, few legends are as captivating as the Alfa 155 V6 TI. This formidable machine made waves in 1993, overturning expectations as a classic “underdog” and capturing the DTM title under the expert hands of Nicola Larini. With its all-wheel-drive system, the Alfa 155 V6 TI, affectionately known as the “Serpentello,” became a symbol of triumph against heavyweights like Mercedes. Today, this iconic vehicle is being revived in the form of the limited-edition 55-SGT by SGT Automobili.
A New Era: The 55-SGT
Set to launch in 2026, the 55-SGT stands as a modern reimagining of the Alfa 155 V6 TI. Limited to just 55 units, this vehicle encapsulates the spirit of its predecessor while integrating modern technology and design. The team behind SGT Automobili, including entrepreneur Stefano Lo Bartolo, designer Emanuele Bomboi, and technician Diego Iodice, has independently crafted this vehicle, marking a departure from traditional Alfa Romeo products.
The 55-SGT is described as a “contemporary vision” of its racing predecessor, rather than a mere replica. Without official endorsement from the Stellantis group—Alfa Romeo’s parent company—the car’s design notably omits the Alfa Romeo logo. This artistic choice allows it to serve as a tribute, paying respect to the Alfa legacy while asserting its unique identity.
Design Inspired by the ITC Era
Visual elements of the 55-SGT draw inspiration from the last iteration of the DTM model in 1996, just before the series transitioned to the ITC. During development, SGT Automobili emphasized aerodynamic efficiency, creating a vehicle that retains the same spirit while adapting to contemporary standards. The design features include a modern GT3-style diffuser and a three-part rear wing, effectively generating downforce reminiscent of the original.
Dimensions that Honor and Evolve
The design challenge was to marry modern dimensions—5.05 meters in length and 1.995 meters in width—with the iconic wedge shape that characterizes the original. The new model is larger and wider than its predecessor, which measured 4.576 meters in length and 1.75 meters in width. The 55-SGT embraces current automotive trends while providing a striking presence on the road.
Despite its larger size, the car is an inch lower than the original, enhancing its sporty allure. The wheelbase has also been extended by 28 centimeters to 2.82 meters, believed to align closely with the platform of the Alfa Romeo Giulia.
Performance to Impress
Under the hood, the 55-SGT offers a spectacular 2.9-liter V6 bi-turbo engine derived from the Alfa Romeo 690T. Depending on the chosen performance profile, this engine can deliver power outputs of 520, 560, or even 620 horsepower. In contrast, the original DTM vehicle produced around 420 horsepower from its 2.5-liter V6 naturally aspirated unit.
To ensure a thrilling acoustic experience, SGT Automobili has engineered a bespoke exhaust system. This system incorporates acoustic resonance chambers that enhance the V6’s signature sound, creating a “clearer and more pronounced” auditory profile.
Advanced Powertrain Technology
Continuing the heritage of the original Alfa racing machine, the 55-SGT features all-wheel technology, with customizable torque distribution between front and rear axles. Drivers can choose from various distributions ranging from a traditional 50:50 setup to a more aggressive 20:80 split, or even a rear-wheel-drive mode.
Unlike the DTM’s six-speed H-pattern gearbox, the 55-SGT is equipped with a modern ZF eight-speed transmission, complete with paddle shifters on the steering wheel, providing a more exhilarating driving experience.
Capturing the Essence of a Racing Legend
The cockpit design draws inspiration from the 1996 DTM racer, incorporating a “function tower” layout that intelligently organizes the various controls. As anticipation builds, the first ten vehicles, known as the “Opening Edition,” are exclusively reserved for select ambassadors of the 55-SGT project and SGT Automobili.
While the exact price remains undisclosed, the return of the Alfa 155 V6 TI in its new form is sure to evoke memories for motorsport enthusiasts. The 55-SGT serves not only as a celebration of a storied past but also as a thrilling glimpse into the future of high-performance automotive excellence.
