For Alexander Zverev, the hot phase of preparation for the French Open begins in Rome (May 24th to June 7th). The German tennis star knows exactly what the Masters tournament in the Italian capital is about.
After several bitter defeats against dominator Jannik Sinner, Zverev definitely wants to set an example at his home game in Rome and gain self-confidence for Paris.
The world number three has very special moments in Rome. He won his first ever Masters title there nine years ago, and he also celebrated his comeback there after his serious ankle injury three years ago. “It’s just nice memories,” said Zverev before his first match this year in the eternal city.
But the path to a possible third title in Rome could hardly be more difficult. Because at the moment Sinner doesn’t seem to be able to be defeated by Zverev.
German-German duel on Friday against Altmaier
The Italian has recently dominated the competition at will and could take the next historic step in Rome: The world number one has already won eight of the nine Masters tournaments, most recently even five in a row. The only thing missing from this list is victory at the ATP 1000 tournament in Rome.
Zverev has been brutally stopped by Sinner several times in recent years, most recently last Sunday at the Masters tournament in Madrid. In an interview with “Sky”, the 29-year-old remained combative: “We all have to find a way as a tour to stop him.”
Tennis icon Boris Becker recently criticized Sinner’s opponents for not offering enough resistance. More aggressiveness and fighting spirit are needed to put the Italian under serious pressure.
Before Zverev can even possibly see Sinner again, there is a tricky opening task ahead. At the start he will meet compatriot Daniel Altmaier on Friday.
