Alexander Zverev was eliminated from the ATP Masters in Miami. He lost in two sets to world number one Jannik Sinner.
Germany’s tennis star Alexander Zverev suffered his seventh defeat in a row against Jannik Sinner and missed the final at the ATP Masters in Miami. The Hamburg player lost 3:6, 6:7 (4:7) against the Italian world number two in 1:53 hours of play. The Tokyo Olympic champion had already failed in the semifinals to Sinner in Indian Wells, who will now face Jiri Lehecka from the Czech Republic (number 21) in the final on Sunday.
“Sascha is an incredible player,” said Sinner, saying it was a “tough match”: “He played incredibly well, but I served very well in the end, especially in the crucial moments. I’m very happy, that means a lot to me.”
Zverev has to wait for his next final in Florida; he last played in the final eight years ago. Before the duel with Sinner, he spoke of the “toughest test”: “I’m looking forward to it. I feel pretty good, hopefully it stays that way.”
In front of the Brazilian football icon Ronaldo, Sinner prevailed again, having now won 32 sets in a row in 1000 tournaments and thus further extending his own record.
“It means a lot to me to be here in the final again,” said Sinner. The Italian is trying to become the first player since Roger Federer in 2017 to achieve the “Sunshine Double” by winning the titles in Indian Wells and Miami in the same year: “I wanted to play as many games as possible. It couldn’t have gone better.”
With Zverev, who will move back up to third place in the world rankings, the last remaining German was eliminated in Miami. Eva Lys, Ella Seidel and Tatjana Maria for the women and Jan-Lennard Struff, Yannick Hanfmann and Daniel Altmaier for the men had already failed in the first round. Laura Siegemund was eliminated in the second round.
