Germany’s number one has not been able to do much since its Australian Open final. Zverev admits mistakes before his home game in Munich. And talks about the rumors about Boris Becker.

Not much runs together for tennis Olympic champions Alexander Zverev. Finally, he lost his opening match at the Masters in Monte-Carlo-once again the early came. “The last few weeks,” admitted Zverev in the run -up to his first appearance at the Munich home tournament, “were a little more difficult.”

Despite everything, he remains optimistic: “I believe that I will get out of the phase. Soon. I think that I can start playing better and better,” said the 27-year-old before his duel against the Frenchman Alexandre Müller (today, not before 2 p.m.). Zverev was the number one number one at the ATP-500 tournament for the first time. He does not want to leave any doubts. “I still have confidence in myself that I will start playing really good tennis to Paris.”

The big goal remains clear: the French Open from May 20. Since his final defeat at the Australian Open against Jannik Sinner – who is not in Munich due to a doping lock – Zverev has achieved a maximum of the quarter -finals at six tournaments. Nevertheless, he emphasizes: “I am still very confident that I will play well for the next few weeks now and hopefully.”

Paris, he explains, is still “the main focus”. He has a firm eye on the longed-for first Grand Slam title. Zverev did not speak specifically for speculation about possible cooperation with Boris Becker. “If there is news, I’ll say it. But there is no news.” Rumors recently arose because Becker was there several times as an observer during training in Monte-Carlo.

Zverev tries to classify its current weak phase. “I played the Australian Open final three months ago,” he says. “So I won’t have forgotten the playing tennis.” In retrospect, however, it was a mistake not to take a break after Melbourne. Instead of regeneration, three tournaments followed in South America.

His goal was clear: he absolutely wanted to be number one in the world for the first time. But the prospect seemed to inhibit him. Due to the latest results, Zverev missed the chance to push the Sinner closed until May 4th from the top of the world rankings. A gestated opportunity – but no reason for exaggerated self -criticism. “Tennis is important, but tennis is not everything in life for me,” he emphasizes. “I’m still going home, just as I would go home with victories. It doesn’t change for me.”

However, the downward trend should finally change. In front of the home audience in Munich. But his last results there should give him little courage. Since his two tournament victories on the facility in the English garden (2017 and 2018), the event has not developed into a good pavement.

He never won more than one game in the following appearances and had nothing to do with the title award. Results, as he last put it down. The turn could therefore succeed in two ways.
