Germany’s best tennis player is in the semi -finals in Cincinnati. However, Alexander Zverev had breathing problems in the meantime.
Alexander Zverev played among the top four players of the ATP tournament in Cincinnati for the third time in a row. The 28-year-old confidently prevailed in his quarter-finals with 6: 2, 6: 2 against the American Ben Shelton-although he had health problems.
In the second sentence, Zverev complained of dizziness and shortness of breath. “I’m not doing so well at the moment, but I have a day to recover,” said Hamburg after his success and added: “I hope to be at 100 percent again.” He has to do that, because his next opponent is the French Open winner Carlos Alcaraz.
Despite his problems, Zverev showed a stable performance on the square against Shelton – also because his opponent produced many mistakes. In total, Shelton made 27 unscathed mistakes and in the meantime seemed unconcentrated. When changing sides after the 1: 4 in the second set, he flung his racket frustrated to the ground. After only 76 minutes the game ended, Zverev converted his second match ball.
The German tennis star also explained: “I am not sure what happened. I felt very good, but towards the end of the first sentence it became increasingly worse.” But his upcoming opponent also had no easy game. Alcaraz was much harder than expected against the Russian Andrej Rublew. Nevertheless, in the end he prevailed 6: 3, 4: 6, 7: 5.
In the last duel between Zverev and Alcaraz at the ATP finals in November 2024, the German had kept the upper hand.
