Bad Bunny made history by winning the Grammy for Album of the Year for his nostalgic album Debi Tirar Ma’s Photos. It is the first time that the most important Grammy has been awarded to an entirely Spanish-language project.

Bad Bunny held his head in disbelief and immediately had tears in his eyes before taking the stage for his big moment. He hugged Harry Styles, who presented the award, and then turned to the cheering audience to enjoy this historic, unique moment. The first words the Latin superstar spoke at the start of his acceptance speech were, of course, “Puerto Rico.”

Benito continued his speech in Spanish: “There is nothing we cannot achieve. Thank you to God, thank you to the Academy and thank you to everyone who believed in me throughout my career, to everyone who worked on this album and thank you to Mommy who gave birth to me in Puerto Rico. I love you,” he said. At one point he switched to English. “I would like to dedicate this award to all the people who had to leave their home, their country to follow their dreams,” he said, before switching back to Spanish. “For all the people who have lost a loved one and had to carry on with a lot of strength, this award is for you,” he said.

Bad Bunny at the Grammys: Message to all Latinos

Bad Bunny ended his speech with a message to his fans and predecessors: “Thank you for all the love, I love you. To all the Latinos in the world and all the artists who came before me and deserved to be here on this stage and win this award: thank you very much,” he said.

#The category is always competitive, but this year the nominees had a particularly close race. In addition to Bad Bunny, Justin Bieber with Swag, Sabrina Carpenter with Man’s Best Friend, Clipse, the duo consisting of Pusha T & Malice, with Let God Sort Em Out, Kendrick Lamar with GNX, Lady Gaga with Mayhem, Leon Thomas with Mutt and Tyler, the Creator with Chromakopia were nominated. None of these artists had previously won a Grammy for Album of the Year, meaning the winner would have made history as the first winner.

Although Gaga and Bad Bunny were considered favorites to win, many were curious to see if Lamar’s GNX and Tyler, the Creator’s Chromakopia would become the first album by a solo male rapper to win in this category.

Bad Bunny was nominated in this category in 2023 for his album Un Verano Sin Ti, which became the first Spanish-language album ever to be nominated for a Grammy in the Album of the Year category. This year, Styles won the award.

This category has often caused surprises in history: Last year, Beyoncé won the Grammy for Album of the Year for her country album Cowboy Carter. It was the first time that the superstar won the biggest prize of the night.

Bad Bunny has received 16 nominations and won three awards throughout his career. Debi Tirar Ma’s Photos earned him six nominations, making him the first Spanish-language artist to be nominated for Album, Record and Song of the Year in the same year.
