The body of Marie ‘Bernadette’ Decuyper (61) was discovered on Friday morning in the Bruges ring canal. After walking home from the café on New Year’s Eve, the lady must have fallen into the water and drowned. Marie is already the fourth person in three months to disappear at night and later be recovered from the water, after Dean (29) in Antwerp, Dietse (34) in Ghent and Ali (22), also in Antwerp. At first glance there seems to be a pattern, but Alain Remue, head of the Missing Persons Unit at the federal police, emphasizes the difference: “Bernadette does not belong in this list, for various reasons.”
