Ajax Women did themselves a very good service today by winning the top match against FC Twente 1-0. Because of the win, the Amsterdam formation is the leader in the Women’s premier league with one game to go.

Ajax Women started the game strongly and rewarded themselves by scoring within fifteen minutes. Tiny Hoekstra was able to tap a rebound at the far post and put the 1-0 on the scoreboard. It was only the fifth goal conceded for FC Twente this Eredivisie season.

The spectators in a packed Bob Haarms stand at Sportpark De Toekomst saw that FC Twente was the better team in the first half and got the bigger chances. Fortunately for the fans of Ajax, the visitors did not score.

In the second half it was again all hands on deck for the team of coach Suzanne Bakker. Ajax made many mistakes and got away well a number of times. For example, Renate Jansen hit the crossbar on behalf of FC Twente and a header by striker Fenna Kalma was deflected off the line by the excellent Ajax goalkeeper Lize Kop.

In the final phase, FC Twente played all or nothing. This created spaces for Ajax. Ten minutes before the end, Romée Leuchter had a huge chance on behalf of the home team after a wrong pass from FC Twente. However, the striker of Ajax could not pass FC Twente goalkeeper Daphne van Domselaar from Langedijk in North Holland in the short corner.

Nevertheless, after a nerve-racking final phase, it remained at 1-0 for Ajax. Thanks to the victory, the team from Amsterdam skipped FC Twente in the position. With one match to go, Ajax has a one-point lead. In the final round on Sunday, May 7, Ajax will play against PEC Zwolle. FC Twente will then receive a visit from Feyenoord.
