AMSTERDAM – The Champions League curse of the Johan Cruijff ArenA continues. Ajax also failed to win a home match against Benfica in the knockout phase of the million-dollar ball. In fact, Erik ten Hag’s team lost unnecessarily and undeservedly (0-1), so that – after the previous 2-2 draw in Lisbon – the eighth final became the final station of the European dream trip. Disappointing of course, because Ajax had remained clear in the group stage and had the better of the game in two matches against the Portuguese.
