Ajax I want to take the first step against ‘impressive’ Union Berlin in the swirling Arena

Ajax must be wary of Union Berlin. That is what trainer John Heitinga says at the press conference prior to the first leg in the knockout phase of the Europa League. “Where they can hurt us is in the switchover and default situations.”

“Union is a strong collective,” says Heitinga about the number two in the Bundesliga. “It is impressive what they show. They fight for each other and fight until the last minute. They also often score in the final phase.”

“Just go with it: if you have that hurricane of sound behind you, it should only give you extra strength”

Following the second half against RKC Waalwijk, it seems that Calvin Bassey will fight the physically strong Union Berlin as a central defender. That will mean that he will form the central duo together with Jurriën Timber and that Edson Álvarez will move to midfield. “That could be,” says Heitinga.

Steven Bergwijn trained fully during the final training. He was absent against RKC due to illness, but if he recovers well he will be back against Union Berlin. Furthermore, the trainer can have a fit selection.

In recent years, Ajax has been known for the atmosphere during European matches. Heitinga hopes that his team will still be able to loosen the fans in the stands. “When we reached the semi-finals, I was in the stands with my son. Then you are also a supporter of the club. Then you are there as a fan. When you see the energy in the stadium, those are very special moments that also stay with you as a player.

“That is something we want to bring about tomorrow”, Heitinga continues. “That regardless of the opponent that comes along, we are a strong collective at home. And, in particular, also have the connection with the fans. Go ahead: if you have that hurricane of sound behind you; you just have to do that extra giving powers.”

The match between Ajax and Union Berlin starts tomorrow evening at 6.45 pm in the Johan Cruijff Arena. Next week the return will follow in stadium An der Alten Försterei in Berlin.
