The confrontations between Ajax and FC Utrecht have traditionally been heavily charged. This edition, the match was completely under high tension due to the position in the rankings of both teams. Logically, the start was fairly lackluster, as neither of them wanted to make any mistakes. Ajax came out ahead for the first time through Carlos Forbs. His cross reached Steven Bergwijn, but he shot wide.

It was Utrecht that asserted itself more after this pinprick. However, the Amsterdam team had the biggest chance of the first half so far. Kristian Hlynsson could easily aim the ball into the goal, but failed to do so. Utrecht took the lead just before half-time through Ryan Flamingo. He shot beautifully: 1-0.

Mike van der Hoorn (former Ajax player) plunged his old team into deep mourning soon after the break by heading in the 2-0 goal. Within no time the Amsterdammers were on level terms with Utrecht. Hlynsson scored both goals. After a foul on Brian Brobbey in the box, Ajax was awarded a penalty.

Steven Bergwijn took responsibility and shot behind goalkeeper Vasilios Barkas: 2-3. The visitors took the lead in the match for the first time. Although it was gone within five minutes. Substitute Jens Toornstra was free and was able to score: 3-3.

The match was temporarily stopped twice afterwards. In both cases a cup was the culprit. In all the commotion, Utrecht also made the 4-3 through Oscar Fraulo. Because of that defeat, Ajax has a historically poor ranking. The Amsterdam team is now seventeenth in the Premier League.
