“I am proud to be able to take this next step in my career,” Míchel responds to his appointment. “Ajax is a big name in Europe, a club that always produces young and good players.”

“Jordi knows me from my work in Spain. Together we discussed the club’s philosophy, how I work and how that will come together,” the Spaniard continues. “He has expressed every confidence in me and together with the other people within the club we are starting a new challenge. The goal is to get Ajax back to where it should be and I am confident that this will succeed.”

‘Ambitious and demanding trainer’

“Míchel is an ambitious and demanding trainer,” says technical director Jordi Cruijff. “I am convinced that he will transfer his vision and his intensive way of working to our selection. I know him well and have been following him for years. His way of working suits Ajax.”

“The fact that he worked for the same club in La Liga for five seasons says something about his qualities and his loyalty. Now that this important position has been filled, we can continue to improve the selection.”

Promotion, Champions League and relegation

Míchel had been Girona’s coach since the summer of 2021 and managed to promote the club to the highest competition in Spanish football a year later. In 2024 he finished third with the Catalan club and qualified for the Champions League. Last season was difficult for the team where Daley Blind and Donny van de Beek are under contract, resulting in nineteenth place and relegation.
