The computer attack on the check-in systems that on September 20 created many concerns in London, Berlin and Brussels airports did not cause serious problems in Italy. But the alert remains high
The Italian Postal Police reported that there was no significant damage to Italian airports following the attack of September 20 to the computer systems of the check-in systems which instead threw London Heathrows, Brussels Zaventem and Berlin Brandenburg in the chaos. Speaking with the news agency Adnkronosthe director of the postal police Ivano Gabrielli summarized the situation as follows: “The operating room of Cnaipic (National Computer Crime Center for the protection of critical infrastructures, editor’s note), when the alarm took place immediately made a first check, ready for intervention in the event that there had been something significant that could impact on the systems in Italy. When it was understood that it was an attack on a check-in service provider to some airports, the alarm has reduced itself. However, we are talking about an alarm that remains in a very high context of alert because they are criminal threats but in this sector in particular the criminal threat fades into hybrid threat, which in some way tends to put critical infrastructures, transport systems, energy systems in difficulty. The alert level has been high for a few years now, today more than ever given the international situation “.

“I understood that the Cor airport systems had not been affected, that is, those that manage the security garrison of boarding and flight control – continued Gabrielli – significantly more delicate activities, the attack has turned into a management problem for airports, but not, fortunately, for the resilience of Italian IT systems”. Also in the other three European airports, where however there were long queues following the attack, the alarm returned. A spokesman for the European Commission declared to the agency Handle: “The current signals do not indicate a widespread or serious attack.” The Commission is monitoring the IT attack against check-in and boarding systems of various airlines in different airports. While passengers suffer inconveniences, air safety and air traffic control remain unaltered. We are collaborating with Eurocontrol, Enisa, airports and companies to restore operations and support passengers “.
