Airbus shares lose money: Construction site for Airbus maintenance center opens in Wunstorf

The Air Force’s largest aircraft, the A400M transporters, will have their own Airbus maintenance center in Wunstorf near Hanover.

The aircraft manufacturer Airbus Defense and Space officially opened the construction site for the project on Monday, for which, according to the company, a sum in the “low three-digit million range” is due. At the groundbreaking ceremony, the Federal Ministry of Defense praised the A400M as a “cornerstone of German air transport,” said Parliamentary State Secretary Siemtje Möller (SPD), who represented Minister Boris Pistorius at short notice.

According to Möller, Airbus has so far delivered 41 aircraft of this type armed forces delivered. The number is expected to rise to 53 by 2026. All machines are stationed in Wunstorf. After difficulties at the beginning, the plane is now an “absolute success story,” said Möller. Development was initially delayed by years and the planned costs were exceeded by billions.

Lower Saxony’s Prime Minister Stephan Weil (SPD) described the military airfield in Wunstorf as an “important hub” for many difficult Bundeswehr missions. From there, the A400M will be used, among other things, as a flying refueling station for other aircraft, but also for transporting relief supplies or rescuing people from crisis regions such as Afghanistan in 2021.

Airbus wants to build the maintenance center on an area of 125,000 square meters directly next to the air base by 2027. As a result, around 300 new jobs will be created there.

The Airbus share temporarily fell by 0.92 percent to 123.08 euros via XETRA on Monday.
