DOW JONES–The Airbus Defense and Space division is developing new functions for the A400M military transporter for the French defense procurement agency DGA. The aircraft will be equipped with multi-purpose capabilities in the areas of intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR). The order was placed by the European armaments organization OCCAR (Organization for Joint Armament Cooperation), which manages joint armaments programs of European states.

“The A400M is a true Swiss Army knife for the armed forces that use it. It has the capabilities and potential to further expand the scope of its missions,” said Jean-Brice Dumont, Executive Vice President Air Power at Airbus Defense and Space.

The new equipment is scheduled to be installed on board the first French A400M in 2027 after a development phase and will be flight tested in 2028.

Airbus Defense and Space is also exploring developing additional capabilities for the A400M. These include long-range jammers, a mothership capability to drop drones and missiles in flight, an increase in payload capacity to 40 tons, and firefighting capabilities.
