The start and runways of the airport are closed as a precaution and seventeen flights have been canceled. Almost 3000 travelers experience problems as a result.
Fifteen flights with destination Munich have moved to Stuttgart, Nuremberg, Vienna and Frankfurt, according to a statement from the airport.
Travelers who are stuck at Munich airport are camping beds, blankets, drinks and snacks. It is not yet clear when flights will be resumed.
According to the police, several people saw a drone near and above the airport. In the first instance it was not clear whether it was one or more drones. The police are trying to find out where the drone came from.
Last week drones were also observed at the airport of the Danish city of Aalborg. A KLM flight then had to move to the airport in Billund.
