What has Ahold Delhaize gotten itself into with the purchase of 1,700 stores in Romania, the poorest country in the EU after Bulgaria? With inflation at 9 percent and a recent 2 percent VAT increase, consumer spending in the Balkan country has collapsed. The government is broke and the highways to bring products to consumers have yet to be built.
