The new Albert Heijn in Eelderwolde will open its doors on November 4, reports project developer Bun. The construction of the supermarket was delayed several times and encountered a lot of resistance from local residents.

In 2016, the announcement of a supermarket of 2,000 square meters stir up a lot of dust among the inhabitants of the Ter Borch district in the village. After protests from, among other things, action group Stop Tynaarlo and years of halt in the city council, the decision was made in 2019 to build a supermarket at the former location.

At the end of 2021, the supermarket received the final blessing of the municipality, when 12 of the 23 council members voted before the shop. But opponents took everything out of the closet to prevent the arrival of the Albert Heijn.

Half a year after the green light, residents of Ter Borch started an emergency procedure at the Council of State, because too much nitrogen would be emitted during the construction of the supermarket. Despite the current objections, construction was started in August 2023 and the objections were wiped off the table at a later stage by the Council of State.

But the problems did not stop there yet, because despite the fact that the supermarket was already there, the store could not open because of a lack of electricity. Project developer Bun tried in vain to force through the courts to get priority when connecting to the power grid. That is why De Grootgrutter in Eelderwolde, who has been ready for use for more than a year, will only be officially open from November 4.
