Such a life-size chessboard existed on Max Euweplein for years, but disappeared after local residents and entrepreneurs complained about nuisance. The municipality’s original idea was to move the sign to Museumplein, but the sign eventually disappeared there after complaints.
The district council in Zuid then promised to look for a new location, but in the end it was not found. And so the big chessboard didn’t seem to return to the city at all.
But a group of chess players, who had been campaigning for years against the disappearance of the chessboard on Max Euweplein, eventually managed to find a spot. Through Centrum Begroot, which subsidizes neighborhood initiatives, they presented a plan to place a chessboard on Frederiksplein. They made it enough signatures to implement the plan.
In 2023, AT5 made this report about the (in retrospect, unsuccessful) attempt to keep the chessboard for the Max Euweplein.
