Assistant referee Christian Gittelmann was hit in the head by a drink cup in the 68th minute of VfL Bochum’s game against Borussia Mönchengladbach. Referee Benjamin Cortus immediately interrupts the game. The stadium announcer later announced the demolition. At that point it was 2-0 for Gladbach.

“Yesterday, as a precaution, I went to the hospital for a check-up after the incident. A skull contusion and whiplash were diagnosed,” Gittelmann explained. The act made him “stunned”. The game on Friday evening was then stopped around 20 minutes before the end. As a first step, the control committee will now evaluate the special reports from the referees and the safety supervisors as well as the television images, according to a DFB announcement on Saturday afternoon.

“Of course, it would be important for VfL Bochum to do everything in its power to identify the perpetrator and then call him to account with the utmost consistency,” said Anton Nachreiner, chairman of the control committee. The DFB sports court will decide on the rating of the game in which Gladbach had led 2-0 at the time of the demolition, it also said in the DFB announcement with reference to the relevant passage. In a similar case in the 2010/11 season, when the game between FC St. Pauli and FC Schalke 04 in Hamburg was called off due to a cup being thrown, the intermediate score at the time, which was also 0-2, was eventually taken as the final score.

Abandoned game in Bochum: What do the rules say in such a case?

Dealing with game abandonments is regulated in the legal and procedural regulations of the DFB. Paragraph 18, paragraph 4 states: “If a national game is stopped prematurely through no fault of either team, it must be repeated at the same place. If a team or its club or both clubs are at fault for the abandonment of the game, the game is deemed lost by the guilty party with 0:2 goals and won by the innocent party with 2:0 goals. If the innocent has achieved a more favorable result at the time of the termination, this result will be counted. This applies accordingly if a subsidiary is involved.” The German Football League (DFL) stipulates in its rules of play that the legal bodies of the DFB make the decision on the game rating. Accordingly, it can be assumed that the game will be evaluated in favor of Borussia Mönchengladbach.

Meanwhile, Gittelmann emphasized that he would “take a few days to calm down and process the matter. I’ll be happy if I can get back on the pitch as soon as possible.” He is scheduled for an international match next weekend.
He also said: “Before kick-off, we thought of the DFB honorary president Egidius Braun, who was also a referee himself, whose values I can convey to young people as a project manager in the DFB Egidius Braun Foundation. We have the war in Ukraine with its effects on all of us. Especially in times when cohesion and consideration should finally have a leading place in our society, nobody needs such pictures.”

After the cup was thrown: That’s what those in charge at VfL Bochum and Gladbach say

Bochum’s sports manager Sebastian Schindzielorz spoke on “ZDF” of an “incident that of course must not happen in this form and as I said: We have to apologize in all forms”. The assistant coach of VfL, Markus Gellhaus, who represented the head coach Thomas Reis, who was infected with the corona virus, said: “There is no excuse for such an action. That’s why you can absolutely understand that they stop the game.” The 51-year-old added: “It’s natural to assume that the game will be scored against us.”

Gladbach’s sporting director Roland Virkus said: “No one in the world would want a football game to end like this.” It annoys me that it ended like this. Was it a single person now? We have to take care of each other, something like this must not happen.”

The litter also caused incomprehension and anger among the players. “That’s what WE stand for and not for these people who trample football!” wrote Bochum’s goalkeeper Manuel Riemann on “Instagram” about a picture with the VfL jersey and the imprint “Vereint Friedlich Leben”. His story also read: “It’s very sad that something like this is called a VfL Bochum fan!” Riemann ran out of his goal after the break in play and yelled at the fans in the section of the stands from which the cup came flying. Riemann’s currently injured teammate Simon Zoller also became apparent. “We, VfL Bochum, have been writing an incredible story for almost 2 years. This action is just disrespectful to all those who work their ass off every day to experience this journey! Let alone the linesman! YOU have no business in the stadium!” Wrote the 30-year-old on “Twitter”.
