After the volcanic eruption, La Palma is full of disaster tourists

‘Stand up for a moment, this is beautiful light.’ Volkskrant photographer César Dezfuli asks and I pose, but the corners of my mouth do not rise without hesitation. For three grueling days we have surrounded ourselves with the drama of the volcanic eruption on La Palma: the destroyed houses, the wasted banana plantations, the lost dreams of the future. Now I’m smiling in the red light of the setting sun, behind me the black Lord of the Rings-esque landscape the volcano has created with its ashes.
