Referee Stieler injured
Referee Tobias Stieler was unable to continue in the second half due to injury and had to be replaced by Christian Dingert. From then on, Stieler took over his less run-intensive role as fourth official.
Freiburg a little more dominant, VfB largely harmless
Even in a balanced second half, Freiburg were the somewhat more dangerous team, combining more purposefully in front of the Stuttgart goal. VfB made an effort, but hardly created any opportunities. In the 58th minute, Sasa Kalajdzic headed a Borna Sosa cross from close range, but Freiburg goalkeeper Mark Flekken was able to deflect the ball over the bar. In the 65th minute, winger Silas Katompa Mvumpa made his sixth appearance of the season. At VfB Stuttgart he is considered a beacon of hope in the relegation battle, but was only able to set a few accents.
Kevin Schade with third goal of the season
Instead, Kevin Schade scored in the 71st minute to make it 2-0 for Freiburg. Ermedin Demirović headed Schade, who shot free-standing in front of VfB keeper Florian Müller in the bottom right corner. The Stuttgart defense didn’t look good in this situation, defended a long ball too laxly and didn’t get into the decisive duel. Stuttgart’s relegation worries are getting bigger. SC Freiburg, on the other hand, remains a serious contender for the European Cup.
On the coming match day, VfB Stuttgart welcomes Eintracht Frankfurt. Freiburg will meet 1. FC Köln (February 5th, 2022).
