After the chaotic broadcast: CNN fact-checks Trump’s diatribe | Abroad

The passage of Donald Trump in a CNN ‘town hall’ has not gone unnoticed. During the question and answer session, the journalist barely got a pin in between. Trump dominated the conversation in his classic style of insults, denials and evasive answers. But what exactly made sense about what he was talking about? CNN fact-checked some striking claims.

The 2020 elections were rigged

We don’t have to waste a few words on this. Trump lost to Joe Biden, who received 306 electoral votes, compared to Trump’s 232. Multiple investigations, even by Trump’s own campaign team and administration, failed to find evidence of widespread voter fraud.

The storming of the Capitol on January 6, 2021

Trump has blamed then-Speaker of the House of Representatives, Democrat Nancy Pelosi, for the day’s violence, as she is responsible for congressional security. However, that is not correct. The Capitol Police Board, which oversees the Capitol Police and approves requests for National Guard reinforcements, is responsible for the security of the United States Congress.

Trump claimed that “some” of the January 6 protesters “probably went too far.” In fact, hundreds of rioters were charged for their involvement in the violence that day. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, 346 people are charged with assaulting, obstructing, or resisting police officers or other Capitol employees. More than a hundred of them are also charged with using weapons or injuring an officer. In addition, the FBI is trying to identify more than 220 people involved.

Before a large group of Trump supporters stormed the Capitol, the crowd was agitated by Donald Trump, who called the Democratic election victory “explosions of bullshit.”

Sexual abuse of writer E. Jean Carroll

At town hall, Trump claimed the jury found he did not rape writer E. Jean Carroll, adding that he “didn’t do anything else.” Carroll accused Trump of raping her in a department store in the 1990s and libel when he denied it.

The jury ruled on Tuesday that the rape was not proven, but the sexual abuse and defamation were. Sexual abuse was interpreted by the jury as subjecting a person to sexual contact without their consent.

Abortion

Trump claimed that the Democrats and Hillary Clinton favor abortion in the third trimester of pregnancy and said they will “kill the baby in the ninth month of pregnancy.”

This is misleading. Many Democrats, including Clinton, believe that abortion should be possible throughout the entire pregnancy if the mother’s health is at risk. However, abortions that take place this late in pregnancy are extremely rare. Less than 1 percent of abortions in the US occur in the 21st week or later, according to figures from the US Centers for Disease Control. The vast majority (93%) occur before or in the thirteenth week.

Attempted to influence election results in Georgia

When asked about a January 2, 2021, phone call in which Trump asked Brad Raffensperger, Georgia’s Republican Secretary of State, to influence the election results in the state, he replied “I didn’t ask them to find anything at all.”

However, that is not correct. In audio recordings obtained by several US news organizations, Trump repeatedly asks Raffensperger to “find enough votes” to reverse his election defeat in Georgia. “All I want is for you to find 11,780 votes,” he said, one more vote than the Democrats got. “We think if you check the signatures — a real check of the signatures in Fulton County — you’ll find at least a few hundred thousand forged signatures.”

Georgia election results, however, were confirmed three times under Raffensperger. There were no indications of large-scale electoral fraud.

Border wall

The ex-president also claimed that he had completely built his promised border wall with Mexico. “I built hundreds of miles of wall, and I finished it, and then I said we have to build some more,” he said.

However, that is untrue. According to an official report released by the US Border Guard two days after Trump left the White House, some 450 miles of the wall were completed under his administration, but some 280 miles remained to be built. The report stated that only 52 miles (84 km) of new wall had been built in places where barriers had not previously existed.
