National handball player Julian Köster (26) may no longer play for VfL Gummersbach in the final stretch of the season.
The backcourt player underwent surgery on the injured meniscus on Monday (April 13, 2026) and, according to the club, the downtime will be several weeks. “It is uncertain whether Köster will play for VfL Gummersbach again this season,” it said in a statement.
There are still seven games left for the Gummersbachers in the Bundesliga, and for the traditional club it’s about getting into the European Cup. Qualifying for the Champions League is also within the realm of possibility. For the coming season, Köster is moving to record champions THW Kiel.
At the beginning of April, Köster had shone with eight goals against Bergischer HC, but on Saturday he was surprisingly missing from the squad in the game against HSG Wetzlar. Even without their captain, the Gummersbachers won clearly and continued their series. The 32:24 was already the tenth win in a row.
