Former professional footballer and current club owner Gerard Piqué was severely punished in Spain after a scandal in his FC Andorra’s duel against Albacete. The 39-year-old was banned for six games for “slight violence against the referees”, the Spanish Football Federation’s (RFEF) disciplinary committee said. A two-month ban was also imposed on Piqué.
The incidents occurred last Friday during the second division game in the Pyrenees principality, which the guests from Albacete won 1-0. The referee noted in the match report that Piqué verbally attacked and threatened him and other officials both at half-time and after the final whistle.
According to this, the 2010 World Champion and 2012 European Champion is said to have said, among other things: “It’s better to go out with an escort so that nothing happens to you” and “In another country you would be finished off, but here in Andorra we are a civilized country”. According to the match report, the comments were also directed at the match observer, among others.
In addition to Piqué, other club officials were punished. In addition, the association imposed measures against the club. The VIP and box area of the stadium will be temporarily closed, and the club – which is in tenth place out of a total of 22 teams in LaLiga2 four rounds before the end of the season – must also pay a fine of 1,500 euros.
