After her pregnancy and parental leave, Theresa Merk will resume her work as coach of the SC Freiburg footballers in the new year.

As the sports club announced on Friday, the 35-year-old is returning from parental leave after the birth of her first child. Her young family and daughter were said to be “doing well”. Merk had before the start of the season handed over to interim coach Nico Schneck. Specifically, Merk will take over at the start of training on January 6, 2025, and Schneck will move into the position of assistant coach.

Theresa Merk: was able to closely follow developments at SC Freiburg

“The past few months have been an exciting time and have presented me with new, previously unknown, but nevertheless beautiful challenges,” said Merk: “I was in regular close contact with Nico and the entire coaching team and was therefore able to follow the positive development closely, even if I wasn’t on the pitch, but now I’m looking forward to being able to continue to actively work on this development together with everyone involved.”

SC is in sixth place in the women’s Bundesliga table. Before the winter break, Freiburg will play two away games (December 8th at Werder Bremen, December 15th in Leverkusen). After the break, things continue at the beginning of February, then the home game against TSG Hoffenheim awaits.
