After failing to qualify for the World Cup, including the 6-0 defeat against Germany in Leipzig, Francesco Calzona will no longer work as coach of the Slovakian national team. According to their own statements, the association offered him a two-year extension, but Calzona is said to have rejected this and speculated on a longer-term contract.
“After an open and constructive discussion, it was agreed that Francesco Calzona would no longer work with our national team,” the association said. “No agreement could be reached regarding the duration of the collaboration.”
The 57-year-old Neapolitan took over the team in August 2022 and reached the round of 16 at the 2024 European Championships. He averaged 1.63 points per game. After the defeat against Germany, the Slovaks had to go into the playoffs and lost at home against outsiders Kosovo 3:4 (2:1).
