Egyptian mediators have said Israel is to rest its weapons at 9 p.m. (Belgian time) on Sunday evening. However, they are still waiting for a response from the Palestinian side in the Gaza Strip. However, a Palestinian official has said a ceasefire will come into effect on Sunday evening and he spoke of 7 p.m.

Since this week, the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians has flared up again. 31 people, including six children, have been killed in the Gaza Strip in recent days. The UN Security Council will discuss the violence in the Gaza Strip on Monday. The Palestinian militant group Islamic Jihad (PIJ) also reports that another Palestinian leader was killed in the airstrike.

The Israeli army on Friday launched a large-scale operation, dubbed “Dawn”, against the Palestinian militant group Islamic Jihad (PIJ). The group, which the US and EU consider a terrorist organization, is firing rockets at Israel in response. Most of them were intercepted by Israeli air defenses. According to the emergency services, two Israelis have suffered minor injuries so far.

Not only members and senior commander Tayseer al-Jabari of the PIJ were killed in that operation, but a five-year-old girl and two women also died, the Palestinian health ministry said. Al-Jabari is believed to be responsible for the rocket attacks from the Gaza Strip and attacks on civilians, the Israeli army says.

Palestinian security sources said three residential buildings were hit in the attacks on Saturday. A five-storey apartment building west of Gaza City is said to have been destroyed. Residents reported that Israeli drones fired a warning missile at the building before fighter jets attacked the building.

The Israeli army, on the other hand, claims that the operation only destroyed weapons production facilities, missile launch sites and weapons storage depots. The Israeli authorities therefore contradict the Palestinian balance, stating that several Palestinian children were killed by a PIJ missile that accidentally landed in Jabalia in the Gaza Strip, but was in fact aimed at Israel. According to the Israeli army, it has already killed 15 PIJ fighters and the leaders of the PIJ have been “neutralized”. The PIJ has meanwhile confirmed that Khaled Mansour was killed. He was in charge in the southern part of the Gaza Strip.

The unrest in Gaza started Monday after the arrest of two senior members of Islamic Jihad. The pair were arrested in the Israeli-occupied West Bank. The organization then threatened attacks, after which the Israeli army cordoned off areas on the edge of the coastal strip for several days and raised the alert level.

It is the most serious escalation in violence between Israel and the armed groups in Gaza since May 2021, when 260 Palestinians were killed and 14 Israelis were killed in 11 days.

The UN Security Council will discuss the violence in the Gaza Strip on Monday. The meeting will be held at the request of the United Arab Emirates, Ireland, France, Norway and China, according to diplomatic sources.
