Goalkeeper Liam Roberts from FC Millwall has to serve a longer lock than normally after his brutal foul at the former Mainz professional Jean-Philippe Mateta. The independent regulatory commission gave the application of the English Football Association FA to extend the keeper’s lock to six games. The actually usual sentence provides for a barrier of three games in a rough foul game. The 30 -year -old goalkeeper will lose his punishment in the next six championship games in the second division in England.

Until Thursday, Roberts and Millwall had time to comment on the last Saturday incident, according to the broadcaster “BBC”, the club wanted to defend itself against a longer lock. Right at the beginning of the round of 16 against Crystal Palace, which was then lost 1: 3, the goalkeeper had hit the striker violently on the head in a failed defense campaign with his left foot. The 27 -year -old Mateta suffered a crack wound on the ear and had to be sewn with 25 stitches.

“That was the most reckless attack on a soccer field I’ve ever seen,” said Palace Chair Steve Parish afterwards. Referee Michael Oliver initially did not even show a yellow card, but then sent the 30-year-old from the field. According to his club, the goalkeeper was exposed to violent hostility on social media despite an apology. When Mateta could return to the square was initially open. He is currently recovering from his injury.

“I am down on the ground about what happened,” said Roberts in a statement that his club published on his homepage. He accepts the red card and the associated punishment without ifs and buts. He assured that he was never on the pitch with the intention of violating someone.
