Mönchengladbach (dpa) – Daniel Farke will be the new coach at Borussia Mönchengladbach. The 45-year-old signed a contract until 2025, as the Bundesliga club announced.
This ends the difficult search for a successor to Adi Hütter, from whom the club from the Lower Rhine had separated at the end of a moderate season.
“With Daniel Farke, we were able to hire a coach who fits the path we want to take exactly,” commented sporting director Roland Virkus on the agreement. “We look forward to working with him to tackle the challenges ahead.” Several media had previously reported on the personnel.
Born in Büren, Westphalia, Farke made a name for himself working at Norwich City. He twice led the club to the English Premier League. Most recently he was hired by FK Krasnodar in Russia, but left the job after a short time because of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Farke gained his first coaching experience between 2009 and 2017 as coach of SV Lippstadt and the second team of Borussia Dortmund. He is scheduled to be unveiled at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday.
Favre canceled Borussia
Farke is only the alternative solution of the five-time German champion. Actually, Lucien Favre should return to Borussia after his tenure between 2011 and 2015 on the Lower Rhine. With their preferred candidate in Switzerland, the Gladbachers thought they were close to completion before Virkus reported to the disappointed members at the club’s general meeting on May 30th about Favre’s cancellation. “We really tried everything,” said Virkus, who took over as head of sport from Max Eberl earlier this year. This surprisingly left Borussia.
The search for a coach was not only difficult because of Favre’s cancellation. Virkus recently saw himself under pressure because of Eberl’s mistakes. With a view to Marco Rose, who left the club after two years for Borussia Dortmund but is already on leave there again, and Hütter, Virkus said: “We have not made good decisions here in the past. It is now essential to make good decisions here.”
