In the fight for a place in the European Cup, TBV Lemgo Lippe celebrated an important victory against ThSV Eisenach in the handball Bundesliga.
After the international break, the East Westphalia team prevailed on Friday evening with 38:34 (15:14) and are in sixth place with 38:26 points, which will probably be enough to qualify for the European Cup in the end. MT Melsungen is tied on points, but has a significantly worse goal difference. Previously, TBV had only collected two points from the last eight league games and failed to win.
The table 13th. Eisenach missed out on staying in the league early, even in mathematical terms, but is as good as saved with a six-point lead over the first relegation spot. The best thrower at Lemgo was Hendrik Wagner with nine goals, at Eisenach Felix Aellen had eight.
Contested first half
After an even opening phase, Eisenach’s goalkeeper Matja Spikic parried a throw from Lemgo’s Hendrik Wagner, before Stephan Seitz (12th minute) gave the home team the lead with two goals for the first time (7:5). But Samuel Zehnder (15th) equalized shortly afterwards from the seven-meter line. The defensive lines worked intensively and Lemgo in particular had strong support: TBV keeper Urh Kastelic made seven saves in the first half.
Zehnder (21st) gave Lemgo its first lead of the game (10:9), which Jarnes Faust (22nd) extended to 11:9. But Eisenach was level again after two quick goals from Aleksandar Capric (22nd) and Seitz (23rd). After a throw from the right wing by Eisenach’s Vukasin Antonijevic (28th) hit the crossbar, Niels Versteijnen (30th) scored to make it 15:13 for the guests. Two seconds before the halftime siren, ThSV was able to shorten the score with a goal from their own half (15:14).
Lemgo intermediate sprint after the break
At the beginning of the second half, Lemgo was able to pull away a bit. Thanks to good defensive work, a continued strong Kastelic in goal and a few technical errors by Eisenach, Lemgo pulled ahead to 18:14 with goals from Zehnder (32nd), Versteijnen (33rd) and Nicolas Theilinger (34th). The TBV now also acted extremely consistently in attack, Hendrik Wagner (37th) increased the lead to five goals.
The East Westphalians played their attacks patiently and scored reliably, while Eisenach made more and more missed throws. Theilinger (45th) completed a TBV counterattack with the goal to make it 28:22. The home team chased after the deficit and had to work hard for their goals, Lemgo repeatedly hit back with quick goals. Lemgo maintained its lead until the end of the game without any problems.
